BODY TALK

Spin, 2017

The Body Talk series explores the vital impulse at the heart of choreographed gesture. To question the role of the body as a vessel of lived experience, Evans collaborated with dancers and choreographers Wanjiru Kamuyu and Smaïl Kanouté.

With Body Talk, he investigates the dynamic intersection between painting, dance, sound, and performance. Through this layered methodology, he explores themes of cultural hybridity, memory, and identity construction within contemporary African contexts. These dancing portraits highlight the body’s ability to carry complex stories and cultural narratives. The dancers’ movements intertwine with an original background motif composed of the pictogram of a bare foot. This symbol acts as a conceptual anchor, embodying the body as language and evoking the traces left across cultures and histories. At the core of this series unfolds an exploration of movement and presence, emphasizing the communicative power of the body beyond spoken language.
